Care Guide: How to Care for your Wig

Cami Wigs Care Guide

How to Wash & Care for Your Human Hair Wig or Topper

Your Cami Wig is made with high-quality human hair and should be cared for gently, just like salon-colored hair. The right routine will help preserve softness, movement, color, and longevity.

Human hair wigs do not receive natural oils from the scalp, so hydration and gentle handling are key.

How to Wash Your Wig

What You’ll Need

  • Wide-tooth comb

  • Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo

  • Hydrating conditioner

  • Clean towel

  • Heat protectant, if styling after washing

  • Optional: deep conditioning treatment

Step 1: Pre-Detangle

Before washing, gently detangle the hair using a wide-tooth comb.

Start at the ends and slowly work your way up toward the roots. Always support the cap or base with your hand while detangling to avoid unnecessary pulling on the knots, lace, or cap construction.

Do not brush aggressively, especially when the hair is wet.

Step 2: Shampoo Gently

Fill your sink or basin with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can dry out the hair and affect the color.

Add a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo to the water and gently mix.

Holding the piece at the part line or cap, fully submerge the hair into the water. Gently move the wig through the water. You may use a wide-tooth comb to softly distribute the shampoo through the hair, working downward from the mid-lengths to the ends.

Gently massage the shampoo into the cap using your fingertips. Do not scrub, twist, or rub the hair.

Drain the sink and rinse thoroughly with clean lukewarm running water until the shampoo is fully removed.

Repeat only if needed, especially if there is product buildup.

Step 3: Condition the Mid-Lengths and Ends

Refill your sink with lukewarm water.

Add a small amount of hydrating conditioner and mix into the water.

Holding the piece at the part line or cap, submerge only the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Avoid placing conditioner directly on the cap, lace, knots, or top of the piece, as this can loosen knots or weigh down the hair.

Use your wide-tooth comb to gently distribute the conditioner through the ends.

Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm running water.

For extra hydration, you may repeat this step with a deep conditioning treatment every few washes.

Step 4: Dry Gently

Place the wig or topper on a clean towel. Roll it gently in the towel and lightly squeeze to remove excess water.

Do not rub, wring, twist, or rough-dry the hair.

Allow the piece to air dry on a wig stand, or blow-dry and style as preferred.

If your piece has a lace front, we recommend gently blow-drying the lace front area into place using low heat or cool air. This helps preserve the shape of the lace and prevents stretching or lifting.

Products to Avoid

Clarifying, Detox, or Sulfate-Based Shampoos

These can strip color, dry out the hair, and shorten the life of your piece.

High-Hold Alcohol Sprays

These can make the hair feel dry, stiff, or coated and may affect color over time.

Protein-Heavy Products

Protein treatments can be helpful for biological hair, but they are often too harsh or stiffening for human hair wigs unless specifically recommended.

Heavy Oils or Waxy Products

These can cause buildup, weigh the hair down, and make the wig harder to style.

Low-Quality Drugstore Products

High-quality human hair wigs perform best with high-quality, color-safe, hydrating products. Avoid formulas that are harsh, drying, or heavily fragranced.

General Care Tips

Do

  • Brush or comb gently from ends to roots before washing.

  • Use lukewarm water, never hot water.

  • Use sulfate-free, color-safe products.

  • Pat and squeeze dry with a towel instead of rubbing.

  • Use heat protectant before styling.

  • Deep condition every few washes or as needed.

  • Store your wig on a stand when not in use.

  • Be extra gentle around lace, knots, and hand-tied areas.

Don’t

  • Do not use clarifying, sulfate, or detox shampoos.

  • Do not scrub, twist, or wring the hair.

  • Do not apply conditioner directly to the cap, lace, knots, or root area.

  • Do not pull on the lace front.

  • Do not sleep in your wig or topper.

  • Do not overwash. Wash only when needed.

  • Do not use excessive heat.

  • Do not brush aggressively while wet.

Heat & Styling

Maximum Recommended Temperature: 300°F

Human hair wigs can be heat styled, but heat should always be used carefully. The lower the heat, the better for long-term softness, shine, and color.

You may use styling tools such as:

  • Blow dryer

  • Curling iron

  • Curling wand

  • Flat iron

  • Crimper

  • Airwrap-style tools

Styling Tips

1. Always Use Heat Protectant

Apply a lightweight, salon-quality heat protectant before using any hot tool.

2. Work in Smaller Sections

Smaller sections allow the heat to pass through the hair more efficiently, so you do not need to hold the tool on the hair as long.

3. Use Heat Only When Necessary

Most human hair wigs hold a curl well for several days, and often up to a week or longer depending on the style and care routine.

4. Avoid Repeated Heat on Blonde Pieces

Blonde and lightened hair requires extra care. Use lower heat when possible and deep condition regularly to maintain softness.

5. Let the Hair Cool Before Brushing

After curling or waving, allow the hair to fully cool before brushing or combing through. This helps the style last longer and reduces unnecessary restyling.

How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?

Wash only when needed. Overwashing can dry out the hair and reduce longevity.

Most wigs do not need to be washed as often as biological hair because they are not receiving scalp oils. Frequency depends on how often you wear the piece, how much product you use, and your climate.

As a general guide, wash when the hair feels heavy, dull, coated, or no longer styles easily.

A Final Note from Cami Wigs

Your wig is an investment, and gentle care makes a meaningful difference. With the right products, light handling, and thoughtful styling, your Cami Wig can stay soft, beautiful, and natural-looking for longer.

When in doubt, use less product, less heat, and more hydration.
